Check the quote path before buying more leads.
Use these six checks to find where a contractor website creates doubt, attracts the wrong jobs, or lets a good enquiry go cold. Each check ends with a correction an owner, office manager, web company, or coding agent can implement.
Why this matters in 2026
The lead source is only half the system.
of surveyed home-service businesses do not clearly list their service area.
of customers expect a reply within an hour, including 28% who expect one immediately.
of quotes are won by top-performing home-service businesses in Jobber’s data.
Source: Jobber 2026 Home Service Trends Report, based on a survey of more than 1,000 U.S. home-service business owners. The figures describe the market; they are not promises about any individual website.
The practical principle
Discovery, confidence, action, and follow-up are different jobs.
Google, referrals, social posts, directories, and paid ads can create discovery. The website then has to answer “Do you cover my job?”, “Can I trust you?”, and “What happens next?” The business still needs to respond and follow through. Measure and repair each stage separately.
Can a homeowner tell what you do and where you work in ten seconds?
A visitor should not have to open three pages to learn whether you handle their job, their property type, and their town.
Inspect this
- The main service is named in the first screen, not hidden under a generic slogan.
- The real service area is written in text and matches the contact or quote form.
- Emergency, residential, commercial, repair, and replacement work are distinguished where relevant.
First correction
Replace “quality solutions for every need” with one plain sentence naming the work, customer, and area you actually want.
Does the quote action explain what happens after the click?
“Contact us” creates work for the customer. A useful quote path tells them what to send, who replies, and what the next step will be.
Inspect this
- The button says Request a roof survey, Book a heating visit, or another job-specific action.
- The form asks only for information that helps qualify or schedule the job.
- The page gives an honest response window and explains whether the next step is a call, visit, survey, or estimate.
First correction
Add a three-line “What happens next” block beside the form and route every submission to one accountable person.
Are your guarantee, finance, price, and availability claims consistent?
Conflicting live answers make a high-value job feel risky. They also force staff to correct the website during the sales call.
Inspect this
- Search the site for every warranty or guarantee duration.
- Compare finance wording, call-out charges, starting prices, and emergency hours across pages.
- Check that offers and accreditations are current and have a named source or condition.
First correction
Choose one verified answer, place it beside the relevant service, and remove every stale alternative.
Does your proof help the buyer judge a similar job?
A row of logos or generic five-star quotes is weaker than proof tied to a real service, location, constraint, and outcome.
Inspect this
- Recent work shows the service, area, problem, and what the crew delivered.
- Reviews mention specific work and can be traced to a real review platform when possible.
- Licences, memberships, insurance, and manufacturer approvals are labelled accurately.
First correction
Turn one before-and-after job into a short case note: problem, location, work completed, constraint, and customer result.
Can the business respond while the crew is working?
A strong page can still lose the job when the enquiry reaches an unattended inbox or voicemail.
Inspect this
- Form, email, and missed-call alerts reach the person responsible for first response.
- The owner knows the response target for business hours and after hours.
- Unanswered enquiries receive a useful acknowledgement and a real follow-up task.
First correction
Assign one owner, one response target, and one follow-up sequence. Do not buy more traffic until this handoff works.
Can you see which enquiries become surveys, quotes, and jobs?
Traffic and form counts do not show whether a channel produced profitable work or wasted the team’s time.
Inspect this
- Record source, contact made, visit booked, quote sent, job won, revenue, and gross margin.
- Use different tracking numbers or source fields where practical.
- Review poor-fit enquiries separately from missed or slowly handled good-fit enquiries.
First correction
Start with a simple weekly sheet. The purpose is to find the broken stage, not to build a complicated dashboard.
Turn the checklist into action
Score the live page, not the intention.
- Give each check 0 for missing, 1 for partly clear, or 2 for verified and consistent.
- Circle every problem that affects a high-value service or an existing source of enquiries.
- Fix the highest-risk answer first, then test the form, alert, callback, and quote handoff end to end.
- Recheck the live page on mobile and ask someone outside the business to repeat what they understood.
Common questions
Before you change the site
Does a contractor website need online booking?
Not always. The important part is a clear next step. Emergency repairs may need a call-first path, while surveys and planned projects can use a short request form or scheduling flow.
Should I buy more leads before fixing the website?
Check the existing handoff first. If enquiries reach an unclear form, unattended inbox, or slow callback process, more traffic can increase waste instead of booked work.
What is included in the complete $49 contractor website audit?
The audit includes a crawl of up to 100 public URLs, manual desktop/mobile review of five key pages and one quote path, three competitors, twelve public-site workstreams, up to 50 buyer-query/topic opportunities, annotated evidence, one conversion-section blueprint with three messaging routes and an experiment backlog, ten ready-to-use treatments, editable implementation and measurement files, one Q&A round, and one public rescan within 30 days.
